Should I select a Gas or Diesel Engine for my truck?

If you're trying to decide between the Cummins Turbo Diesel engine and the Hemi Gas (6.4L or 5.7L) V8 engine, make sure to consider all the factors involved, including cost effectiveness, towing, and payload. Many of our customers find that there are many advantages to both engines, though diesel engines are typically more fuel efficient than gas engines, with most customers reporting an average of 4-5 miles per gallon when you drive a truck with diesel. Diesel engines cost considerably more than gas engines, however, so total costs for you may be an important factor in this decision. Here at Sterling Heights Dodge Chrysler Jeep RAM, the 6.7L Cummins Turbo Diesel has been a popular choice with many of our Macomb County commercial truck customers.

Want to learn more? Use our Diesel Vs. Gas Recapture Schedule in an Excel Spreadsheet. You are not able to change the example below but I would be happy to email you the "live" spreadsheet in PDF that you can interact with.

The color highlighted cells have built in math formulas to enter current info such as the cost of a gallon of diesel and gas, estimated miles per gallon of each, the cost of a diesel engine (call me for the cost) and how many miles a year you drive.  It automatically calculates how many years it will take to recover the additional cost of the diesel.  The more miles per year you drive, the faster the payback period.

Again, there are many factors - towing, maintenance, vehicle pay load, weather, etc. - that are very important and can affect your fuel economy and cost of operation. This is simply a tool that gives you a little more information to consider.
